The Metric That Determines Virality the Most

What does Instagram want from you?

What does TikTok want? What does YouTube want?

You might say money.

But before these platforms can get your money, they need something much more important.

They need your time.

Your Attention Is What They Sell

Social media platforms make money by selling advertising.

The longer you stay on the platform, the more chances they have to show you ads. That makes your attention incredibly valuable.

So think about this from the platform’s point of view.

Instagram recommends a video to you. You watch the whole thing. Then Instagram recommends another video, and you watch that one too.

Instagram has done its job.

It found something that kept you watching.

So how does a platform figure out which videos are worth recommending?

One of the strongest clues is how much of the video people actually watch.

Watch Time Percentage Matters

YouTube has a metric called average percentage viewed. Other platforms have similar ways of measuring retention and watch time.

The idea is simple.

If I give someone your video, what percentage of it are they likely to watch?

Let’s say you post a 30-second video.

If the average person leaves after five seconds, that tells the platform something.

But what if most people watch 25 seconds?

Or all 30?

Now the platform has evidence that people actually want to watch your content.

That makes recommending it to more people a much safer bet.

80% or 90% Is a Great Sign

If people are consistently watching 80% or 90% of your video, you probably have a very strong piece of content.

People are not just clicking on it.

They are staying.

That distinction matters.

A great thumbnail might get someone to start your video. A great hook might get them through the first few seconds.

But neither means much if everyone leaves halfway through.

You need to keep earning their attention.

You Can Go Above 100%

This is where things get interesting.

Sometimes your average percentage viewed can go above 100%.

How?

People watch the video again.

Maybe they missed something. Maybe the ending makes them want to rewatch the beginning. Maybe the video loops so smoothly that they watch part of it twice without thinking about it.

You can even build videos around this behavior.

For example, the ending of a video might reveal something that changes how you understand the hook. Now you want to watch the beginning again.

If your average percentage viewed is over 100%, that can be an incredibly strong signal.

You gave someone a 20-second video, and they gave you more than 20 seconds of their time.

That is exactly what these platforms want.

Does High Retention Guarantee a Viral Video?

No.

There is no magic number that guarantees a video will go viral.

Shares matter. Comments matter. Likes can matter. The topic matters. The size and behavior of the test audience matter too.

But if I had to look at one metric to judge the potential of a short-form video, retention would be near the top of my list.

It gets to the heart of what the platforms are trying to do.

They want to keep people watching.

Stop Asking Only How Many Views You Got

Views tell you what happened.

Retention can help tell you why.

If a video gets poor retention, look at where people leave. Maybe your hook takes too long. Maybe the middle gets boring. Maybe you gave away the answer too early.

If retention is strong, study that too.

What kept people there?

Because when you understand how to hold attention, you start understanding one of the biggest parts of making content people actually want to watch.

The platforms want people’s time.

Make videos worth spending it on.
